He was accused of 'ignoring police hand signals', but explained that it was "a misunderstanding" and was arrested just before the second round of the PGA Championship. Despite the 1-hour delay in the game, he recorded 5 under par 66 and is currently tied for 3rd place.
An incident occurred in which Scotty Scheffler (28, USA), the world number one in men's golf, was arrested and released by the police ahead of the second round of the PGA Championship, the second major tournament of the year.
According to foreign media such as the Washington Post (WP) on the 17th (local time), Schaeffler was arrested and taken into custody by the police at 7:28 am on the same day while trying to drive his vehicle into the driveway of Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, USA, the venue of the PGA Championship.
He even had his mugshot taken at the police station (a facial photo used to identify criminals), and after being interrogated for about an hour, he was released and played in the second round. The game was reportedly delayed by about 1 hour and 20 minutes.
It is said that traffic was very congested near the golf club after an accident occurred around 5 a.m. where a man was hit and killed by a shuttle bus while jaywalking. At the time, Schaeffler was driving toward the golf course and passing by the accident site.
Meanwhile, a police officer who was handling a traffic accident near the entrance to the golf course ordered Schaeffler to stop the vehicle, but he did not follow the instructions and continued to drive the vehicle. In the process, a police officer was injured, and later pulled Scheffler out of the car, handcuffed him, and took him into custody.
The police charged Scheffler with reckless driving, ignoring a police officer's hand signal, and assaulting a police officer. The police officers who arrested Scheffler said they did not know who they were arresting.
“It was a very confusing situation, and I misunderstood what (the officer) was asking me to do,” Scheffler said in a statement after his release. “I had no intention of ignoring any instructions.” Meanwhile, despite experiencing such turmoil, Scheffler showed his potential as the world's No. 1 player by recording 5 under par 66 in the second round of the PGA Championship. He tied for 3rd place with 9 under par through the first round (4 under par, 67 strokes). 19가이드03
