Steel drum is a percussion instrument made from metal. They come from Trinidad and were manufactured and used in the 20th century. It was not played individuallybut in groups or bands. At present, it is the national musical instrument of Trinidad and Tobago.
On the shores of Venezuela, percussion instruments or drums were used for communication by the native Africans. Since the customary drumming and percussion instruments were forbidden or restricted, the natives used bamboo instead. Again, like the custom percussion instruments, bamboo was also barred by the British colonists. The locals did not let this hinder their way of living, and music flourished through innovations. Winston “Spree” Simon used his ingenuity to honor their tradition and culture by acquiring big steel barrels which were used as containers for biscuits. Simon allowed a fellow to borrow his innovation, but when it was given back, he noticed the inward dent. In an attempt to fix it from the inside, dents were formed and he discovered that dents actually produced varying sounds and pitches. Sooner, the inward dent was created with fourteen notes, and it is now a popular instrument played by individuals and bands all over the world. Steel drums are now used for concerts, events, studio sessions, even for exercise sessions to hype up those who are exercising.
The steel drums were originally used for festivities and rituals until they went mainstream. In fact, in Nick Jonas’ song “Close,” you can hear the steel drum being played in the opening refrain accentuating the whole song. Of course, from used oil barrels or biscuit containers, they are now intentionally manufactured using sheets of steel molded to their shape with different convex dents for varying tones when hit.
Nowadays, steel drums have also variations. If you are looking for steel drums for sale as a beginner or an experienced musician, here are the types of steel drums that you can choose from.
First, we have the PanyardJumbie Jam Steel Drum. It has a large surface to strike, and there are notes written on the drums to guide the user. Hence, this is a great choice for beginners. This kind of steel drum produces a strong and clear sound when played in a venue with a small space or accommodates few people. But this is not suitable for big events in big areas. It is surely a good pick for beginners, but professional musicians would not prefer this.
Next, we have the Panyard Steel Drum. Now, this is the professional percussionist’s pick. The steel it is manufactured from is heavy-duty and is tuned professionally. It delivers a loud and clear sound. It also has a large surface to strike, the same as the first one. They both come from Panyard Company in the U.S.
Next is the Moukey Mini Tongue drum, manufactured from fine quality steel. It is 10 inches, and produces eight different tones, and is played by using a mallet or hand. The sound of this drum is also resounding and booming.
