DMLS 3D printing or Direct Metal Laser Sintering is a popular additive manufacturing technology that produces fully-functional parts and prototypes with metal or metal alloys. The process employs the powder-bed-fusion technique, where three-dimensional objects are created by fusing layers of metal powder. A highly powerful laser beam melts the powder through selective scanning as administered by the CAD file.
In a metal sintering 3D printer, you can adjust the thickness of the powder layer, which generally ranges between 30 to 60 microns. Upon completion of a layer, the process is repeated till the desired object is accomplished. DMLS proposes multiple opportunities to engineers and the manufacturing sector for rapid prototyping and mass production. While there are other metal 3D printing technologies like Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), Electron Beam Melting (EBM), etc., DMLS is often preferable over others. Do you want to know why? Here it is.
DMLS: The Ideal Choice!
When the metal 3D printing industry is flourishing with the latest concepts, DMLS 3D printing is extensively approved for all good reasons:
• Material Selection- DMLS allows the implementation of a wide array of metals and alloys like aluminium, steel, titanium, stainless steel, copper, cobalt, nickel alloys and other metals. Thus, you can choose from pure metals to alloys as per the product requirements.
• Reusability- In this technology, the unsintered metal powder can be reused, which minimizes waste production and makes the process cost-effective.
• Design Flexibility- Direct Metal Laser Sintering 3D printer enables the production of functional parts with complex geometries and superior precision. Alongside this, the process does not require support structures.
• Large-Scale Customization- It is easier to customize metal parts for mass production because DMLS operates without hard tooling and fixtures. Engineers can conveniently make changes in the product design at any point.
• Surface Finish- DMLS 3D printed parts have a smooth surface finish, and often there is no need for post-processing. So, the lead time is much less than other technologies.
DMLS 3D printer price varies according to the built quality and volume of products. Each printer comes with unique capabilities and has specific applications in various industries.
