Hip Dysplasia is a medical condition characterized by the improper fitting of the femoral head into the hip socket. In maximum cases, this condition occurs by birth while, in some, it develops in early life. In this post, we will talk about hip dysplasia in detail.
The treatment of this condition also varies depending upon the severity of the condition. When other methods of treatment are not feasible, surgery becomes the last option left. Surgical intervention may also require the use of Ortho Implants and instruments. Let us put some more light on what the condition is.
Hip Dysplasia – An Overview
Hip dysplasia is the condition where the hip joint isn’t aligned properly. The hip joint is a type of ball & socket joint, and the alignment of both must be correct for the joint to function properly. In the case of hip dysplasia, the femoral head is not fully covered by the pelvic socket, and this results in complications like pain and differences in the leg lengths. In severe cases, joint dislocation may also be seen. Hip dysplasia can also damage the cartilage that cushions the bone.
This condition most commonly occurs in firstborn children, whereas a girl child is more prone to hip dysplasia than a boy child. Another interesting fact about this condition is that the left side hip is affected more than the right side one.
Causes of Hip Dysplasia
Pressure on the hips of the fetus in the womb is the primary reason why hip dysplasia occurs. This is one of the reasons why it commonly occurs in newborns at the time of birth. In certain cases, the genetic condition is also the reason for hip dysplasia as it passes down to the families.
Sometimes, babies also develop this condition in their early life. If the condition is seen by birth, it is known as congenital hip dislocation or developmental dysplasia.
Symptoms Associated with Hip Dysplasia
Symptoms of the condition may not be seen in newborns, and to better assess the condition, the doctor must wait for at least a few months. Some of the common symptoms seen in individuals with hip dysplasia include:
Hip pain
Unequal leg lengths
Loose hip joint
Limping while walking
Diagnosis of Hip Dysplasia
The doctor will perform a physical examination to notice the symptoms of hip dysplasia in newborns, and it will be repeated after two months. This is because symptoms take time to show up in babies. When it comes to imaging tests, they will only be performed in kids above 6 months. The tests ordered may include a CT scan, X-ray, or ultrasound. Imaging tests confirm the severity of the condition.
Treatment of Hip Dysplasia
The treatment of the condition will completely depend upon the severity. But the doctor always prefers non-surgical treatment first. If those methods fail to provide any relief, surgery may be performed. Common treatment methods may include:
Bracing
Application of a brace or a harness is known to be the best option for children below 6 months. It helps keep the joint in place while the child grows.
Physical Therapy
Certain exercises are also suggested by the doctor to improve joint strength and flexibility.
Surgery
The last treatment method is surgery, and it is performed in severe cases or when other methods do not relieve the symptoms. Different types of surgeries performed may include:
Arthroscopy
Periacetabular osteotomy
Total hip replacement
